Melbourne to Canberra is a unique event, as it’s a 250kms race, despite the distance between the two cities being 671kms. And the way the organisers are able to do this is stunning.

Starting from Melbourne’s Flinders St Station, the cyclists ride onto the rear end of a goods train, and cycle to its front. For those who haven’t seeing an Australian goods train, some of these can be a few kms long, as this one is; and with the combination of the train’s length, plus the wind factor, by the time the cyclists have made their way to the front, the train is pulling into the cargo area next to the Wagga Wagga Airport.

From there, it’s a mere 240km run up the Sturt & Hume Hwys, over several moderate inclines and pass the famous Dog on the Tuckerbox in Gundagai on the way to Yass; where they will swing onto the Barton Hwy and up the final steep incline to Canberra.

In Canberra, the cyclists will finish with a loop around the State Circuit, and finally the inner Capital Circuit, where they will use their slingshots to attempt to hit a pollie whilst crossing the finish line.
