Covilhã CGP obviously crosses this huge beast, but fortunately (or not) for the cyclist it doesn't finish on the Top of it. But let's start from the beginning. Starting in front of Covilhã's Town Hall the riders start right away climbing... guess what... the climb to "Torre", the highest point of "Serra da Estrela". 19 km at 6% will for sure start the carnage inside the peloton.
The organizers decided to include the biggest climb of the race on the first kilometers of this very short race (just 102 km) to allow some early attacks to break the race. The captains won't be able to depend on their TMs to control the race. Everyone will be suffering right from the start.
After reaching the Top, riders will descend in the direction of Manteigas while enjoying the opportunity to recover some energy. After the 20 km of hard descend, another climb with 4,8 km at 12,6% to the "Observatório Meteorológico das Penhas Douradas". Won't be the most difficult point of the race and after the climb, the riders will enjoy a period of 20 km of flat roads and descend to the final climb.
10 km at 5,7%! Ladies and gentleman, the "São Bento" climb! Not a steep climb, nor a long climb but the last climb! After the difficulties the riders have passed with long climbs and hard descends, the kilometers will take long to go by and everyone will be happy to cross the finishing line.
Past winners of this race include Tito Vera, Otto Hagman, Ammar Zenagui and André Marinho who was the first ever Portuguese rider to win this race. Who will be the next?
