Spitak was entirely destroyed during the devastating 1988 earthquake, and it was rebuilt in a slightly different location.
Directly after the start the peloton moves in the eastern direction over the main road M7. The first 27 kilometers on this road will be uphill, the steepest part is 7.1%, but the biggest part of this climb isn't steep at all, from flat to only a few percents.
After the climb the race continues with a long easy downhill for 18 kilometers before entering the city of Gyumri.
Gyumri, known as the cultural hub of Armenia due to the many artists and craftsman who originated from the city, used to be called Alexandropol until it became under Soviet rule. The name of the city was changed in 1924 to Leninakan after the deceased Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin. At the time of the breakup of the Soviet Union, the city was renamed Kumayri between in 1990 until 1992 when it was finally given the name Gyumri.
In the city of Gyumri the peloton will ride 8 local ronds of 10.5km.
The race will be pretty technical in these local rounds, because of some short steep parts, and lots of pretty sharp corners. After entering the city the peloton will pass the independence square, Charles Aznavour Square, Vartanants Square and Peace Circle Park. The finish line is drawn near Vardan Ayemian Theatre, a few hundred meters after a sharp corner. Will the winner be a sprinter, or will it be an attacker?
