The peloton heads southwards to the ancient city Siracusa, but not in a straight line. The riders take a large detour through the inland. As soon as they reach Sicily’s south coast they ride eastwards towards the southeast corner of the island, where Siracusa is situated. Siracusa used to be one of the most powerful city-states of the Mediterranean world. It was allied with Sparta and Corinth, two other powerful cities in those days. Siracusa is also mentioned in the Bible, due to a visit from the apostle Paul during one of his missionary journeys. The importance of Siracusa is underlined by UNESCO, who placed the city on their list of cultural heritage.
The stage is a pure sprinting stage. The roads are very flat and it’s almost certain the race will culminate in a bunch sprint. The wind might play a role in the finale, especially when the peloton moves alongside the southern coast of Sicily. It will be very tough for attackers to stay away.
