Gargano is a small peninsula in the north of Apulia and famous for its cliffs and forests. From the start the road immediately starts to climb the slopes of Monte Calvo, the highest point of Gargano. This climb reaches percentages of over ten percent which will break open the race right from the start.
After five kilometers of climbing the young guns face a hilly road, mostly downhill, through Carpino, Ischitella and Vico del Gargano. At the Localita Salerno, after 88 kilometers, the final commences with the long, but not very steep, climb towards Parco Simone. From here, only the best hill riders will be able to follow the strong men of the day, with the Monte Sacro still on the menu.
The favourites of the day will need to save up a little bit of their energy for the final climb alongside Pantano di Sant’Egidio, only five kilometers from the finish line, because the red flag signalling the final kilometer looms just after the top. This relatively flat kilometer takes the riders back into San Giovanni Rotondo, where they’ll be awaited by the finish line and, perhaps more importantly, managers hoping to sign the next great rider.
