The location was first used as a military base in World War II, nowadays the town relies more on tourism than the station for its existence.
Exmouth has a hot semi-arid climate. Temperatures often reach over 40°C in summer, however winters are mild and pleasant with daytime temperatures around 25°C.
Starting in Exmouth, the route meanders down the coast towards Exmouth gulf, a marine environment full of diversity. From there the race turns inland, along the perimeter of Giralia, a 2,776-square kilometre pastoral lease that operates as a sheep station. The riders will be able to experience the sandy and stony plains suitable for grazing that identify the area. Turning back toward the coast through the Cape Range National Park, there are some spectacular gorges, before concluding at the world heritage listed Ningaloo reef, Australia's largest fringing coral reef.
The nature of the course is spread across many disciplines, so will not favour a rider who specialises in particular area. The conditions on the day will determine the outcome of the race, with breakaways sometimes managing to stay away from the chasing peloton. For the best chance of succeeding, a good all-rounder with decent support should be well placed to challenge for the victory.
