The island group, like most of Iceland, is mostly known for its breathtaking view of nature's wonders and the force nature can bring, as was experienced during the volcano eruption in 1970. Since then however, things have gone back to normal - and beautiful. Tourists flock in every year to see the beautiful geology the island has to offer. And for those who don't like beautifully shaped rocks, the islands offer a good view on the Puffin birds, Iceland's pride and joy.
The GP however, features a time of the year just before the Icelandic people go full-viking at the yearly rock festival Þjóðhátíð, for which people all around Iceland flock to the islands. The race, located on the largest island Heimaey (13.4 km2), starts off nice and steady, but increases in difficuly as circuit goes on. Of course this doesn't say all that much, as the same route needs to be traversed a small thirteen times before the riders are finished. The start and finish are close to the touristic attraction Elephant Rock. Along the road there will be a number of acts by the local inhabitants, which range from beautiful to flat out crazy. All in all, this GP is a festival in itself, but please, stick around for the actual festival. You will not regret it.
