As the name of the country indicates it (Black Mountains in English) , most of the roads besides the ones on the coast are designed for climbers , and this one doesn't disappoint.
Starting from the southern border of the country , Ulcinj , the first 20 km of the race is flat but gradually morphs into a very heavy mountain race , ending up in the ski resort of Zabljak in the north , with a panoramic view on the highest summit of the Balkans , the Bobotov Kuk.
Although there is usually no strong winds , the race remains technical due to the poor quality of the narrow roads in the mountains.
The last difficulty of the race is a 22km long climb averaging 9.5%. Before that , there are a lot of ups and down on a hilly terrain , making it clear that most of the time the breakaway riders can simply have a festival of attacks before the last climb. Usually , around 30 riders max reach the last climb each year.
