Every year towards the end of August, the population of 7500 comes together to celebrate the Maize festival, which features a parade with decorated floats, the Maize Queen pageant, children's amusement rides and activities including tug of war and wood chopping.
Atherton has a humid subtropical climate that differs from the surrounding tropical savannah climate due to the town's elevation high on the Atherton Plateau. Starting in Atherton at an elevation of 700m, the course will travel along the plateau, winding through several small remnants of the rainforest which once covered the area, many of which are now protected in national parks. The fertile plateau which is part of the Great Dividing Range, hosts some significant climbs which will set the scene for the day’s race.
With the course ranging between 500m and 1,280m in elevation, the Atherton Race is one for the pure climbers. Should they be able to hold on during the descents, the tough uphill finishing slog will play into the hands of only the best climbers in the field.

Description
The terrain in Atherton Race includes many steep and hard climbs and has very hard downhills. The terrain hardly includes any hills and has only a few flat roads. The stage ends on a tough climb. The finishing climb gets steep from time to time. The route isn't technical at all.
