The race is located in and around Gevelsberg, city of industry and mining, in the shadow of the Ruhrgebiet.
After departure and a tour to the west, the peloton is awaited by a few longer climbs. None of them is really steep, but they might be the first chance to get rid of the non-climbing sprinters among the peloton. Turned back to Gevelsberg, the riders may test the small climb to the finish for the first time.
The classic is not over yet though, since fifty kilometers over hilly roads have to be overcome before heading back again to Gevelsberg. Here, the surviving sprinters and hill specialists will have their try on the difficult finishing stretch, which has gradients up to 9%. Only the last kilometer is more or less flat, which has it all for a spectacular finish. The winner will head home with a trophy of the Coat of Arms of Gevelsberg: a brick gable on a green hill, hinting to its mining history in the middle of the beautiful green hills of Germany.
