Some sprinter’s teams may well wish to claim that this stage doesn’t exist either, but as the million inhabitants of Cologne will testify, the peloton must have come from somewhere. The finish in Cologne is less technical than the previous stage and will favour stronger riders on flatter roads. There a few hill hills on the approach, but these are likely to be nothing of concern to most riders, but may offer a little temptation for riders hoping for a day in the break.
The varied cityscape of Cologne with historic churches interspersed by high-rise skyscrapers marks the end of the stage 3 and the real beginning of the tour for the general classification contenders.
