In Munich though, the respite ends, as a 59km time trial will require expert pacing and a measured effort in order to finish in a respectable time. The length of this flat and technical time trial mean that sizeable time gaps will open up. The specialists will see the stage as an opportunity for a prestigious victory, though many general classification contenders will see their aspirations of overall victory slip through their grasp.
The route is an ‘out and back’ one with each pedal revolution taking the riders out of the city centre, knowing that those revolutions will be all the more painful on the return leg and it is in the latter split times that it will be clear who has paced their effort well and who emptied the tank too soon.
