Having started with a prologue the north of the country the tour finds its way to the southernmost point. Though the stage is predominantly flat, a series of short and sharp climbs on the approach to Maastricht force a selection of the strongest riders, and though the stage is likely to end in a sprint, rider’s ability in the hills will be critical. Pure sprinters will have their top end power drained by the hills, and may find punchy hill sprinters getting the better of them. Time gaps here are considerable and the winner in Maastricht will take a big leap up the standings as a reward for their efforts.
