Newquay - Newquay begins down on the seafront at the popular Fistral Beach, skirting Newquay Golf Club before taking a sharp left hand turn to follow the River Gannel inland. After some miles the riders find themselves in the shade of the high banks as they move into farmland, the sounds and smells of cattle never far away as they funnel up and down in the narrow country lanes.
In time the peloton moves into more open countryside, through the town of Bodmin and skirting the western edge of bleak and blasted Bodmin Moor. Here their bovine companions give way to robust sheep and ponies, and the weather on the foothills of the moor can be cruel and unpredictable. The gradual swing back to the west will be greeted with relief by some, as the riders push on back through the undulating lanes to reach the north coast at Mawgan Porth. From here the leaders roll on, atop the cliffs along the coast road and back down into Newquay, finishing with a short climb to Pentire Point, overlooking the town.
