As the whole county is crossed by small hills, the only option to arrange a sprint course was in the exceptional Danube Delta, the main tourist attraction of this part of the country.
The Danube Delta is one of the largest delta regions in Europe and as it is among the most rich places in terms of biodiversity, it has a multiple protection status: it is in the same time Natura 2000 site (both SCI and SPA), UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ramsar wetland of international importance and Biosphere Reserve. This has made it very difficult for organizers to get all the approvals but with Tulcea Sprint being a virtual race, the bureaucratic obstacles were overcome. It helped that cycling is promoted as a sustainable transport mode and the organizers promised no car will be part in the caravan - this may not please some overweight team managers but we need to care about the environment.
The course is quite straightforward, it follows the only paved road in the Danube Delta, from Tudor Vladimirescu, a small village of less than 300 inhabitants, situated across Tulcea, the county capital, to the village Chilia Veche, and back.
The narrow and technical route follows the northern and longest branch of the Danube - Chilia - there will be little space for fans to cheer up the riders, except for those who will rent boats and follow the race from the water. The finish is organised in the same Tudor Vladimirescu village, and the caravan will rest in Tulcea, a town of almost 100.000 inhabitants, that is the main gate to the Danube Delta.
