Kinderkopjes Koers is a Belgian one day race that is arguably one of the most prestigious division 6 races a team can win. It doesn't have quite the history to it that some of the major classics can lay claim to and at just 133 km it is not particularly long. However, this usually leads to a very aggressive race.
The English translation of the race name is 'cobbled course' and it does not disappoint. It starts in the centre of Kortrijk, just across the border from the French - Belgian border to Roubaix, host of the more famous cobbled classic. This race though heads further in to Belgium eventually finishing in Ghent.
The race has 27 km of pavés with key sectors all appearing with less than 50 km to go. The first major segment is the infamous Koppenberg. It is the only notable hill in the entire race and is normally too far out to be decisive but those on a bad day will be dropped here and will not see the front of the race again.
From now on the cobbles come thick and fast and there are 3 sections that are notable for their difficulty. The first of these three is the Mariaborrestraat at just over 2 km. This is then quickly followed by a 2.4 km stretch of the Paddestraat. The most decisive stretch of cobbles is the Lange Munte at 2.5 km. The winning break is usually made on this stretch with the rest of the peloton too fractured to work cohesively to bring back the leading riders.
The winner will be the strongest of contestants. He shall be crowned beneath the cathedral having conquered what many see as one of the most prestigious and exciting races of the division 6 calendar.
