The course is a 29 km test of an athletes ability to perform under some of the most testing conditions known to man.
The cyclists will start right next to the sea and immediately from the off begin to climb. At first the climbing starts gently but after 6.3 km of a false flat, there is a 2.4 km climb that averages at 11% up to the now defunct White Alice Communications system that the Americans had built during the cold war. This once top secret location is the highest point of the course and offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The descent off of this climb is relatively easy and allows the riders to recuperate if they pushed themselves into the red going up.
The bottom of the descent marks the half way point in the course and the riders begin to head back towards Nome. The route follows the Nome river on its return leg but this does not mean flat roads. The course undulates with five notable hills that the riders have to get over on their way back with several ramps of above 15%.
The last 4 km are largely gently downhill allowing the TT specialists to try to pull back any lost time on the climbers who took time on them on the early climb.
Any rider wishing to win this race must have the perfect balance between being able to climb and to time trial whilst having the grit to survive the Arctic like conditions that often sweep this area of Alaska.
