The peloton moves towards Palermo in a straight line with the Caronie Mountains on their left and the blue green Mediterranean Sea on their right. When they reach Palermo the riders make an extra local round through Palermo’s hilly surroundings. The riders will finish the tour at the flanks of the Monte Pellegrino (alt. 606 m). The mountain is known for its pilgrimages (hence the name). The famous German writer Goethe mentioned the Monte Pellegrino as the most beautiful promontory of the world.
The finale of the stage is very tough. Only the best hilly sprinters will remain and battle it out in a short but epic fight on the Monte Pellegrino climb (average grade is 4,4%). The stage will be won by the hilly sprinter with the biggest acceleration in his legs. The riders will not finish at the summit, but at 403 meter height. When they are finished the riders will be rewarded with a wonderful panoramic view on Palermo.
