It is about 150 kilometres south of the middle of nowhere and 1,889 km from the state’s capital city, Brisbane.
The older people of the area who remember Dajarra's heyday say that the area trucked more cattle than Texas, drovers on horseback would bring cattle from as far away as Western Australia to put them on the train at Dajarra. More recently, some opportunities for local employment have come with the development of the nearby Phosphate Hill phosphate mine and fertilizer production plant.
As the peloton leaves the town of Dajarra, 29km away they are greeted by the Standish Range, home to large climbs such as Big Red Bluff and The Monument. It is here where the real race begins and the climbing specialists emerge from the group.
The hard downhills along the 72km route will be a selective agent to sort the climbers, however the very steep uphill finish will favour the climbing specialists once again. The competition on the day will be a large factor in determining the victor, with ordinary riders sometimes able to pull off the extraordinary.
