Following the ceremony, all directeur sportifs lay flowers at Mestia cemetery to honor the fallen Georgian veterans. The course weaves among many formidable auls, fortified medieval villages with easily recognizable towers.
The bunch will not have time to take in the Upper Svaneti mountain scenery, as the road from Mestia to Mulkhra River gorge features several snow slicked descents between a stone aul wall and a steep river cliff. The battered peloton will try to restitch itself after the carnage.
The final selection takes place on the climb to the 12th century Ushguli chapel, the highest habitable point in Georgia and a part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Standing on its steps, the winner will raise wild goat horn filled with finest Georgian wine against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains.
