The race starts from Saponaia and covers a 40km loop around the country. The riders will tackle this hilly course three times, making for a total distance of 120km. The course takes the riders through several towns and cities in San Marino, including Serravalle, Casvir, Borgo Maggiore, Città di San Marino, Acuaviva, Lago, Fiorentino, Montegiardino, Crete, Faetano, Saline and Bosche before returning to the starting/finish line in Saponaia.
Along the way riders will be treated to breathtaking sights including beautiful architecture such as Palazzo Pubblico in Città di San Marino which houses many government offices. They will also pass by Basilica del Santo located within the city walls that houses relics of Saint Marinus himself who is said to be one of the founders of San Marino. The landscape along this route is both rugged and stunning with rolling hills that offer picturesque views on all sides. While most roads are well-paved be warned that some sections can be narrow so riders must exercise great care especially when navigating tight corners or steep downhill sections.
Cyclists will face quite a challenge navigating this terrain with several hills on this route which require them to push hard on their bikes. One such hill is Monte Titano which stands tall at over 700 meters above sea level! This hill has been known to create significant gaps between breakaway groups and chase groups. The hilly nature of this course will definitely favor hilly sprinter type of rider who can handle difficult hills with strong sprinting legs.
Overall Il Giro di San Marino offers an exciting experience for both cyclists and spectators alike with its beautiful landscape rich history and challenging terrain.
