Starting at the home of River Plate in the north of the city, in the stadium simply known as El Monumental, the riders will leave the ramp from this magnificent bowl-shaped arena. The atmosphere might not be as electric as during a match, but the streets will be lined with fans as the riders make their way south.
The route takes the riders through the more upmarket district of Palermo, passing the grand park and Japanese garden. It then moves through the Recoleta region before passing the magnificent Teatro Colón and iconic Obelisk in the Plaza de la República. These wide avenues will benefit a time trialist with good flat road skill, but there are some strong 90 degree bends to test their technical ability too.
Eventually, riders will arrive at La Boca region, “the mouth” of the Matanza River that flows into the enormous Río de la Plata. Here, the route runs down the colorful Caminito, a popular alley home to many artists and some of BA’s cultural highlights.
Finally, the riders will enter the monolithic Bombonera stadium, home of Boca Juniors. Riders will be greeted with a literal wall of fans as the stands in the ground rise almost vertically. Hopefully no River Plate fans are nearby, as the supporters have been known for their violent clashes. Perhaps this cycling event is the one thing that could bring the city together, if only for a day.
