With lots of bad luck and struggles, this Season 70 has been a tough one at Amstel Flanders. However, the new Captain Ahab comes again to save the day… or the season.
After some serious training in Perm Tour with a very unfortunate result despite bringing the 50th win for the team, Emil Sønderby went Down Under on his fearful drakkar and the '1' sewed onto his lower back as the defending champion.
And he made clear very soon his strong shape at Stage 2, winning once again and grabbing the green jersey of GC leader to never drop his lead. Rivals didn’t stand a chance and only a photo finish deprived him from winning all sprints. Although he didn’t have any good or super legs on any stage, Emil and his strong team kept the race under control and the Danish berserker won Kangaroo Tour plus three stage wins with an absolute exhibition of brute force and experience.
Thrown up in the air by his team mates once again like the past edition, Manager Williamson couldn’t be happier with such a performance from his rider. “We’re very proud of having a cyclist of the talent and strength of Emil. He’s writing his own history in both the team and OCM and we look forward to enjoy great moments together in the coming seasons,” Williamson assured.
And Sønderby has a new objective in his mind. Becoming the rider with most wins at Amstel Flanders and why not achieve it this season? We’ll cross fingers, for now, enjoy your well-deserved jersey and... skål!!!
Over n’ Out.
