Fontes Retires at 42

Written by Cokol Breakaway Team at 21:13 15/9-2024

Five real-life years later. So much has happened, yet OCM has remained a constant for me. I have several thanks to extend, but the most important is to you, dear reader. The community is easily the best part of the game, and the community is why we return to it daily. A special shout-out goes to Finz of NightmareChaos, whose humor can brighten any day.

A big part of my strategy has been chasing points, not trophies or jerseys. Daily form and off days can impact even the most impeccable plans. My first thanks go to Team Stredet (former #1 for new folks), who had a similar game outlook and influenced my gameplay as a young team. Maybe it's unsurprising then that I kept chasing points with Fontes.

I always loved watching the cobbles. My now wife and back then-fiancee were planning to watch Roubaix in 2020, right before our honeymoon, when COVID shut down the world. I will share some of my favorite races: a windy Gent Wevelgem 2015 and Tour of Flanders 2010, a great Cancellara win. I was so happy that POM Wonderful came back to the game and could see this message. How he managed USA Reid Lenard in TvA with a wild card as a mid-division team was inspirational. I wanted to establish a cobble-only squad in the first division and am proud to be in the top 20 for several seasons. New race calendar rebalancing, which happened after Fontes started his career, has made it much easier to climb divisions and fairer for new cobble teams.

Last and most importantly - a big thank you to mapei bianchi. If you don't know, Virenque posted Fontes in a free-hire list thread. Don't blame yourself - nobody picked him up for a day, and I certainly did not think he was captain material when I hired him, but I was training a lot of riders back then and could not pass up. My original plan was to rotate captainship between Fontes and Bo Svärd, recharging top form, but Fontes maxed close to 180 points and over 57.5 AV before race training days. Without your generosity, this journey would have been impossible.

What's next? The best manager in OCM right now is Team AEK - there is no question in my mind. I cannot wait until Isidoro Morgovejo takes over the points record - only ~10k to go!

  Much love,
  Dr. L
