Lindfield Locknuts’ Isle of Man rider Brendan Mask (26) has been a domestique throughout his career, until just a few weeks ago when manager SitsWithRemote finally let him go to the TT centre in France.
Then a little while later, team leader Mark van Hintum was still getting over 4th place on the Volta Ao Porto when the Vuelta de Los Castillos loomed on the horizon. Who could lead? Kyle Pribble? In bad shape. Edan Hurless? Still in recovery. Czeslaw Tarka? Always needed to support others. So it looked as though Brendan was last man standing and the decision was taken to let him try his first tour as leader.
From then on it’s just the stuff of fairytales. He won the King Stage (4) to take a narrow GC lead, then dropped back to one second down after the hilly Stage 5. All he could do in the final TT was hang on and hope, but incredibly he did, and took the magnificent Castillos yellow jersey back to the Isle of Man. It’s hard to imagine him topping this during the rest of his career
